Palestine is an ancient land, known to
us mainly because the birthplace of Jesus, Bethlehem, is one of its principal
cities. Also famous is the walled city of Jericho, the oldest continuously
inhabited city in the world, and the lowest at 1400 feet below sea-level.
The Dead Sea,
the salt water lake renowned for its mineral muds,
is also at this low level, its water evaporating yearly. The fabled holy
city of Jerusalem
with its bazaar, towering walls, mosques, churches and synagogues, is a
city of colourful contrasts, noisy and modern today with a seductive
atmosphere and busy streets.
Palestine is under Israeli military
occupation, economically devastated and struggling for its independence
as a nation which is the hoped for outcome of the Israeli-Palestinian
peace process.
